If you’re like most people, sleep is something you look forward to after a long, stressful day. Laying down on a comfortable mattress to drift off for seven or eight hours is a welcome respite. However, if you’re sleeping on a dirty mattress, that sleep might be coming at a cost to your health.
“But I wash my sheets weekly and my mattress is only a few years old!” you might say. Keeping your linens clean is a good first step, but it’s not protecting you as much as you might think. Here are three ways your mattress could be endangering your health:
1. Dust Mites – We’ve all heard the horror stories of the creepy-looking little critters in your bed. What’s even worse than dust mites? Their excrement. I know, I know. It’s almost too much to think about. These little guys cause a bunch of different allergy symptoms such as asthma and eczema.
2. Dust Particles – Even if you don’t suffer from dust allergies, the dust that accumulates in your mattress can be overwhelming and make it hard to breathe easily. You spend 1/3 of your life sleeping, and if the air quality in your bedroom is poor due to excessive built-up dust in your mattress, it will affect your ability to breathe.
3. Mold and Mildew – Ever fall asleep with wet hair or spill something on your mattress? It’s entirely possible that mold spores have developed inside your mattress. Mold is a major contributor to health problems, and should be dealt with immediately before it spreads.
